In 1915, Russian painter Kazimir Malevich published his famous manifesto From Cubism and Futurism to Suprematism: The New Realism in Painting. Thanks to the enormous art collection of the wealthy Russian businessman Sergei Shschukin (1854-1936), Malevich had become acquainted with the Western European avant-garde styles of Fauvism, Cubism and Futurism from the early 20th century in Moscow. In his manifesto, he pleaded for a special form of abstract painting, for compositions that are purely abstract and geometric. In his view, art should be constructed from geometrically determined forms, such as the square, the rectangle, the triangle and the circle.
